Any comparisons to the first Batman score seems almost idiotic since that was action related and Batman Returns is motif oriented. The Gothic shape of the music is still here combined with a ballet like approach with a complex rhythmic structure, especially for the dramatic passages. The highly detailed and vivid orchestrations are astonishing with their perfect timing and there never seems to be enough of sparkling musical colours from Elfman's part.
The gallery of personalities are strongly reflected in the score. The Batman theme appears in a new arrangement and the Penguin got a tilting motif. But Elfman saved the brilliance for the Catwoman with her "purring" and "miaowing" on sweeping and lush strings. Excellent! The extremely large orchestra and chorus appears to do their outmost in this overwhelming joyride!
